A. Karats in gold are a measure of purity. The higher the karat, the more gold a piece of jewelry has. Pure gold is composed of 24 karats. 18K gold, on the other hand, has 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals.
However, it is unusual to find 24K jewelry. To make jewelry, gold is usually mixed with other metals like copper or silver since pure gold would be too soft and would bend and scratch easily which is why gold jewelry is usually 14k or 18k. For a piece to be labeled "gold" jewelry in the United States, it must be a minimum of 10K; in England and Canada, the minimum is 9K; while in European countries like Italy and France, the minimum is 18K.
